Tibetan nomads have been using horses as transportation since the beginning of time. A horse trekking journey in Tibet will offer a rare insight into a timeless culture, allowing you to share the tradtional trails and campsite with the nomads of Tibet.

There are many exciting opportunities for travel by horseback in Tibet. We can arrange rides of any length and difficulty level, for the experienced horseperson or the riding neophyte. Most of Tibet is not road accessible, and by horseback, we can access the traditional pilgrimmage paths and historic salt trading routes off the beaten tourist paths.

The Tibetan Plateau is a harsh and demanding environment. The horses are sturdy but small and you will need to be fit enough to walk some of the steeper hills and more challenging terrain. There is also a weight limit of 85kgs (190lbs) to ride.

Meet our horse whisperer.

Sharyn Jones grew up with horses on the Canadian prairies and has been riding since before she could walk. Her horseback experience includes competing in 3 day eventing, breaking and training young horses, teaching riding, and working as a jockey in both flat and steeplechase races. She also did short stints as a cowboy and a movie stunt rider.

Sharyn has been lived and worked in Tibet for 5 years, and has a detailed knowledge of the land, culture and history of Tibet. She set up our horse trekking operation in Tibet and her longest ride to date was a challenging 10 day adventure with a blind rider from Germany. Sharyn also worked with farm staff at the Braille Without Borders training centre for the blind which now proudly boasts some of the strongest and happiest horses in central Tibet!
